Lydia Jenkin: What’s wrong with The Blue Rose?

April 12th, 2013

It’s usually a good sign when the pitch for a TV show sounds like nothing you’ve heard before.

A good girl temp, a bolshy friend, an IT geek and an ex-accountant get together to form an amateur sleuthing club in downtown Auckland – primarily to find out who killed Rose, a clever law firm PA who had been doing her bit as a modern-day Robin Hood on the side.

Nope, definitely hadn’t heard that one.

Plus there was the pleasing news that the cast was to be led by Antonia Prebble and Siobhan Marshall, two highly watchable actresses, and they would be playing roles written especially for them by the creators of Outrageous Fortune.

Eleven weeks ago it debuted to a solid audience of 264,380 (better than OF’s 2005 debut of 260,751) – and with it’s noir-ish styling and big name cast, all looked promising.

Then My Kitchen Rules (which pulls about 400,000 viewers a week) started in the same timeslot on TV2, and The Blue Rose ratings took a bit of a slide, so it made sense for TV3 to move it from 8.30pm to 9.30pm.

But unfortunately that didn’t seem to help. The show hasn’t been featuring highly in any ratings in recent weeks, save the urban Auckland 25-54-year-old demographic, and even then it can’t beat The Big Bang Theory (something I find hard to fathom).

So with its good quality ingredients, $6.9 million in funding from NZ On Air, and the support of its broadcaster, why has The Blue Rose not proven to be the hit it might have been?

Well, its Auckland-oriented ratings might be one indication – while it’s fun for us inner-city Auckland dwellers to see our day-to-day world reflected on screen, and perhaps some Wellingtonians would see a similarity, the rest of the country clearly felt they didn’t have much to relate to. Whether we like it or not, the Jafa prejudice still exists.

Then there’s the overall story arc: 13 episodes based around solving one murder was always going to be a stretch. CSI manages to wrap them up in one, and even Jane Campion has opted for just six episodes to unravel the mystery in Top of the Lake.

So there had to be some padding, which comes from the extra cases The Blue Roses take on. And though their efforts to help the little people who’ve been exploited by less savoury characters are kind of endearing, mostly they’re just distracting or even boring.

Stories like the one about the naive woman being manipulated to give her money to an online predator seem a little outdated, really.

Then there’s the problematic attempt to blend both drama and comedy into one show. There are lines played for laughs (poor Ganesh gets far too many sketch show moments, and Krystle comes across as a bizarre comedy scapegoat) that jar against the serious nature of a murder case, and lessen the dramatic weight of the relationships between characters. Their friend is dead, and they’re breaking various laws, pitting themselves against a killer. So the comedy ends up feeling forced, uneven and takes away from the strong emotional performances the cast are capable of.

Of course, as the series has zoomed in to focus on the key storyline of murder and corruption, and The Blue Roses have become more competent in their sleuthing, it’s become more gripping, more “must-see” television.

The only problem is that it might be a case of too little too late for some fans.

Would a second series be a good gamble then? I don’t know. It’s a show with some strong assets – great key cast members, good styling and music. But after solving the case of who killed Rose, a rethink of story arc and emphasis might be in order. Just don’t get any zombies involved.

Lake series delves deep: Wenham

April 12th, 2013

Aussie actor counts Jane Campion project as one of the most rewarding in his career.

Having played Faramir in The Lord of the Rings, Australian actor David Wenham knows his way around the Queenstown area.

But his return was to a bigger role in a smaller production by another celebrated Kiwi director.

Top of the Lake, the six-part drama from Jane Campion, is a moody and compelling mystery that evolves into a rich, complex character study and brings together a variety of behind-the-camera talent and a stellar cast.

Wenham plays Laketop’s top cop, Al Parker, who must investigate the disappearance of the 12-year-old daughter of a local drug baron while also dealing with Robin Griffin (Mad Men‘s Elisabeth Moss), the police officer specialising in child protection called in to investigate.

“Al enjoys his job and has a genuine concern about what goes on in his community,” Wenham says.

“But his station is a bit old-school, a bit of a boys’ club, and the community comprises a very mixed, eclectic group of characters – there are a fair few fringe-dweller types.

“And then when Robin arrives at his station, well, she’s young, female and attractive in a world that’s not really used to that kind of energy.

“It’s fair to say Al finds himself somewhat attracted to her, which makes things even more difficult.

“It’s quite a strange community in many ways, which makes this really interesting viewing.”

Wenham is quick to praise Campion and co-screenwriter Gerard Lee for their screenplay.

“She has the ability to … bring humour to material that is very dark. She can find interesting quirks of humour in the most unexpected environments and situations. That’s an incredible skill and I’m in awe that someone can articulate it so well.”

He says there’s a wealth of “delicious drama” in Top of the Lake, ranging from Robin’s homecoming to the conflicts that emerge in Laketop’s various factions and splinter groups.

And its six-hour duration allows the series to dig deeply into all these plots. Wenham feels this is one reason why so many creative people are turning to television as a storytelling medium. “I’m increasingly seeing material that’s not only comparable to, but often exceeding feature films.

“Jane has said before that this couldn’t be made as a feature film – having six hours to actually explore this story really gave her the options to do exactly what she wanted to do. “And I think more and more that’s the case these days – you have very talented people opting to work in TV rather than film because they have the ability to fully realise their stories with fewer outside influences fiddling with their work.”

Wenham counts the project as one of the most rewarding of his career. “I was really proud to be part of it.”

Halle Berry, 46, calls her pregnancy ‘miraculous’

April 12th, 2013

Halle Berry says she and her loved ones are touched by her miraculous pregnancy.

The 46-year-old actress confirmed on Monday she is expecting her second child by her French actor fiance Olivier Martinez.

Berry is already mother to five-year-old daughter Nahla with Canadian model Gabriel Aubry.

The star and Martinez, 47, feel graced to be expecting at this stage in their lives.

“He’s thrilled, surprised like I am… I think when a man knows he’s having a child I think they are as happy as women are,” Berry tells ET Online.

“It’s a miraculous thing if you think about it, at our age it’s an even more miraculous thing, so we’re happy.”

It appears that providence has been aligning for quite some time.

Berry’s daughter Nahla has actively been putting in requests to the divine to become a sibling.

“She has been praying for a baby sister – who knows what she’s going to get – but she’s been praying for a baby sister,” Berry says.

“So a baby of any sort will just make her through the roof, she really wants to be a big sister.”

Berry is thought to be around three months into her pregnancy at this time.

She will not allow parenthood to prevent her from having a full professional life.

“My dream now is much more realistic, especially as I sit here with another baby in my belly. I want to be a mother and have my career at the same time, and I’ve been told my whole life, well you can’t have it all at once,” she says.

“The dream for me now is to have a career that I’m proud of, that I feel good about and still have time for my children and be a mum too.”

Surviving Apocalypse Z

April 12th, 2013

It’s the year 2013 and New Zealand is in the grip of the zombie virus.

Military outposts are set up in an attempt to control the outbreak, but cities fall, overridden by those infected with the ‘Z’ virus.

But there’s still one final outpost: Aotea Square, Auckland City.

It is occupied by a skeleton crew of soldiers holding on in the hope of evacuation and when a broadcast brings a crowd of survivors, all must band together to ensure survival.

Welcome to Apocalypse Z, an interactive theatre experience, not for the faint hearted. Royale Productions’ new play will take the audience on a journey of survival and the human spirit.

Told in real time, Apocalypse Z is performed in a purpose built, fenced-off military zone in Auckland’s town centre, Aotea Square.

“When the audience arrive they will immediately be thrust into the role of survivors who have gathered in hope of being transported to safety.’  creative producer Charlie McDermott says.

“We will ask them to accept challenges that will affect the outcome of the show and to make life and death choices. Choices that ultimately reveal their true selves.”

“We want to seriously unsettle the audience and give them something totally different to the conventional theatrical experience.”

Apocalypse Z is not a haunted house; nor a role-playing game, it is theatre but from the moment the play begins, the audience become the ‘survivors’ in the story.

“We want people to be involved but we also want to make this terrifying ride as comfortable as possible, audience members choose to be involved as much or as little as they want,” McDermott says.

Apocalypse Z is the brainchild of David Van Horn and Simon London, joined by theatrical powerhouses Andrew Foster, Charlie McDermott and Beth Allen.

Apocalypse Z is on in Aotea Square from April 12 to 27.

Monday to Wednesday 7.30pm, Thursday – Saturday at 7.30pm and 9.30pm (No show Sunday).

Jay-Z’s new song defends Cuba trip

April 12th, 2013

Jay-Z has prompted a White House response after defending his trip to Cuba in a new song released online.

The rapper has released Open Letter in response to two Florida Republican lawmakers questioning whether his visit to Havana with wife Beyonce, which coincided with their fifth wedding anniversary, was officially licensed.

On the song, Jay-Z talks about his distaste for politicians and repeats the refrain, “Y’all gon’ learn today.”

Jay-Z raps: “Want to give me jail time and a fine? Fine, let me commit a real crime.”

US Treasury officials said the couple’s trip was licensed as an educational exchange after Cuban-American US Reps Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Mario Diaz-Balart expressed concerns about the trip and wanted to know if it was licensed.

Jay-Z and Beyonce are avid supporters of President Barack Obama. Jay-Z raps in his song, “Obama said, ‘Chill, you gon’ get me impeached, you don’t need this (expletive) anyway, chill with me on the beach.”

White House press secretary Jay Carney was forced to clarify Obama had nothing to do with approving the couple’s trip after facing questions over the lyric in his press briefing today.

“I guess nothing rhymes with Treasury. Because Treasury offers and gives licenses for travel as you know and the White House has nothing to do with it,” he said.

“I am absolutely telling you the White House from the President on down had nothing to do with anybody’s travel to Cuba.

“It’s a song… the President did not communicate with Jay-Z over this trip.”

US citizens aren’t allowed to travel to Cuba for tourism, though they can obtain licenses for academic, religious, journalistic or cultural exchange trips.

The so-called ‘people-to-people’ licenses were reinstated under the Obama administration.

Beyonce and Jay-Z marked their fifth wedding anniversary in Havana last week.

On the new song, the 17-time Grammy winner also addresses the Brooklyn Nets, which he owns less than 1 percent of. Jay-Z is selling his stake in the team so he can become certified as a player agent, a person with knowledge of the details said Wednesday.

“Would have bought the Nets to Brooklyn for free, except I made millions off of you (expletive) dweebs, I still own the building, I’m still keeping my seats,” he raps.

Jay-Z also calls himself “the Bob Dylan of rap music” on Open Letter, produced by Timbaland and Swizz Beatz.

Hefner’s new wife soaks up marriage

April 12th, 2013

Hugh Hefner’s wife is revelling in newlywed bliss. Crystal Harris married the publishing magnate in a lavish New Year’s Eve ceremony at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles last year.

The couple’s romance has had its share of critics due to their 61-year age gap. Crystal is 26 and Hugh 87.

Reports their romance wasn’t for keeps reached a climax when Crystal became a runaway bride.

The couple were first due to marry in June 2011 but she called it off just days before the ceremony.

Three months after their nuptials the model says she couldn’t be happier, and she isn’t looking back.

“I’m having the time of my life,” she cooed on America’s KTLA news network.

Crystal said she’s particularly in love with Hugh’s romantic side and admitted his gestures can often be over-the-top.

“He’s an amazing man, such a romantic,” Crystal gushed.

“For Valentine’s Day, he was like, ‘What kind of flowers do you like? Do you like roses? Do you like mixed flowers?’ I like everything, so he got me everything… He’s just so sweet.”

Hugh is believed to have a back-up plan just in case his new bride does have a change of heart.

A month prior to the nuptials, a lawyer visited the couple’s residence to finalise the paperwork for a prenuptial agreement, according to Radar Online.

“Hef’s lawyer dispatched his assistant to the Playboy Mansion approximately three weeks ago with the final version of the prenuptial agreement for them to sign,” a source told the website after the vows.

Crystal will reportedly have no rights over Hugh’s assets should they split or if the ageing multi-millionaire dies.

This is the third time ladies’ man Hugh has been married, while it is Crystal’s first union.

Pregnancy gave Drew Barrymore a beard

April 12th, 2013

Hollywood star Drew Barrymore grew an odd goatee when she was pregnant with daughter Olive.

The Charlie’s Angels star gave birth to her first child in 2012, and is now opening up about the changes she experienced as a mum and a mum-to-be.

“I got a wonderful little goatee, and it was red! I also got hyperpigmentation on my cheeks,” the 38-year-old tells In Touch magazine.

And only now, six months after baby Olive’s birth, is the new Mrs Will Kopelman in pre-baby shape – and Barrymore admits she wasn’t exactly toned up then.

“I’d rather kill myself than get into a bikini right now! I take care of myself, but I’m never going to be the person who talks about diet and exercise. I would fail that conversation!”

Complaints over ‘draconian’ Robert Plant security

April 12th, 2013

Security staff at Robert Plant’s Vector Arena show have been accused of heavy handed efforts to stop fans dancing.

The former Led Zeppelin frontman complained from stage about “draconian” security at his Auckland show last night.

He was annoyed that fans weren’t able to stand against the front railing at the arena without coming into conflict with security.

“I’m nearly 65 years old, I’m hardly going to start a riot,” he said.

Several nzherald.co.nz readers have backed his views, saying they were treated roughly when they got up to dance.

Robert Jones said he was kicked out of the show after dancing during Ramble On.

“The security then pushed us all back and we all rolled back, and we all rolled forward, I was pushed from behind and knocked into a young security man who then just grabbed me and dragged me out.”

The show, which was priced at between $123 and $153, was entirely seated.

Security did allow a roped off area down the sides for people to stand and dance but were faced with complaints about people dancing outside the designated space.

Vector Arena general manager Stuart Clumpus said security staff had a tough job balancing the expectations of fans who wanted to dance against those who wanted to stay seated.

“We’ve got this dichotomy between people who want to get up and dance and people who’ve paid $150 for a seat. It’s hard to balance.”

Clumpus said he decided late in the show to allow people to dance against the front railing.

Plant’s management had requested an all-seated show and that may not have been the best option, he said.

He would make it clear to fans at future seated gigs that security could get involved if they stand up.

“We’re still learning and this is a learning experience.”

Clumpus claimed that Plant said after the show that his comments about security were made in the moment and should not have been so critical.

Toddlers paintings sell for $14,000

April 12th, 2013

His work is described as art in its purest form, untouched by life’s pollutants and representative of what is important and beautiful.

What makes it particularly special is it was created by a two-year-old … and it’s been sold for A$12,000 (NZ$14,660).

Vinnie Marcis, who has high functioning autism, was 14-months-old when his mother Summa Shing first realised he had a gift.

“My grandfather, who is an art teacher, commented on how wonderful the works were,” she said.

Sydney gallerist Nicky Ginsberg said that the work is ”quite lyrical and spontaneous”.

”I understand why this child would be considered to be verging on the brilliant,” she said, pointing to one painting with a black background on the artist’s website as ”amazing”.

She recently hosted a Studio Artists in Colour exhibition including adult artists with Down syndrome and autism at her NG Art Gallery in Chippendale, said being ”locked in” an autistic world meant such artists were ”bursting with energy”.

She had purchased one work herself by another boy with autism, attracted to its freshness and simplicity.

Some people with learning disabilities are termed ”outsider artists”, rather than simply artists, said Ginsberg.

But there was a debate about whether the outsider term celebrated or diminished artists with autism, she said.

It was not only the family who were amazed by his talent, little Vinnie caught the attention of local art gallery owner and curator Troy Williams.

Williams said he discovered Vinnie’s ability when a friend told him to look at his paintings on Facebook.

“I didn’t realise Vinnie was only two-years-old when I was looking at his works,” said Williams, who has seen the toddler in action.

“I liked what I saw and basically decided that I would like to represent the artist and do a show.”

He exhibited his work at C Gallery in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley last week, a show  Williams said was very successful.

“He’s only got nine paintings left out of 30,” he said.

“Also there was a little extra money made from donations at the bar, which was donated to the AEIOU Foundation [for children with autism]. People were astounded that the works were done by a two-year-old because they have so much maturity, composition and fluidity throughout.”

Shing has since provided an update on the show, reporting the works sold for about $12,000 in total, with 10 per cent of the profits donated to the AEIOU Foundation.

She said she felt Vinnie was aware of his achievement.

“He seemed to really turn it on that night and has been painting more than usual since,” she said.
